The Complete Guide

Every room has a noise problem - here's how we solve it

Open-plan offices buzz with conversation. Conference rooms echo on video calls. School classrooms muddy every word the teacher says. Restaurants are too loud for comfortable dining. Recording studios produce coloured, reverberant recordings that frustrate engineers. Auditoriums lose clarity at the back of the hall.

The solution in every case starts with the same product: acoustic wall panels - engineered surfaces that absorb sound energy, control reverberation, reduce echo, and transform how a space sounds and feels.

Ecotone Acoustic Limited manufactures the full range of acoustic wall panels available in India - grooved wooden slats, perforated wooden panels, wood wool fibre boards, fabric-wrapped panels, CNC PET felt panels, micro-perforated panels, metal acoustic panels, and composite acoustic panels - all under a single roof at our Greater Noida facility. Every panel is independently NRC-tested, fire-rated, and available with complete technical documentation for green building certification, architectural specification, and contractor BOQs.

This guide covers every product in our acoustic wall panel range, what each one does, where each one belongs, and how to specify, buy, and install the right solution for your project.

How acoustic wall panels work

Sound is energy. When a speaker speaks, machinery operates, or music plays, the sound source creates pressure waves that travel outward in all directions. When those waves strike a hard surface - concrete, glass, plasterboard, marble - the vast majority of the energy reflects back into the room. Multiple reflections combine, overlap, and persist, creating the reverberation, echo, and noise buildup that makes spaces acoustically uncomfortable.

Acoustic wall panels interrupt this cycle. They are constructed from materials - fibrous mineral wool, open-cell polyester fibre, natural wood fibre, or resonant panel systems - that do not reflect sound. Instead, they convert the kinetic energy of the sound wave into a negligible amount of heat through friction between air molecules and the panel's internal structure. The reflected energy returning to the room is dramatically reduced. Reverberation time shortens. Speech clarity improves. Background noise levels fall. The space becomes easier to work, learn, and communicate in.

The key metric: NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)0.0 - 0.95
Bare concrete · 0.02
Ecotone panels · up to 0.95
Reflects almost everythingAbsorbs almost everything

NRC is a number between 0.0 and 1.0 representing the average proportion of sound absorbed at four standard frequencies (250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz). A panel rated NRC 0.90 absorbs 90% of the sound striking it. An unpainted concrete wall has an NRC of just 0.02 - it absorbs almost nothing. Ecotone Acoustic Limited's acoustic wall panels achieve NRC values from 0.65 to 1.0 depending on product type, thickness, and installation configuration.

Why this matters when you specify a panel

Two panels can look identical and perform completely differently. The backing, cavity depth and infill density behind the face are what actually deliver the rated NRC - see the installation section below for the specification detail that's most often skipped.

7Micro-Perforated Acoustic PanelsNear-invisible perforation, seamless aestheticsNRC up to 0.85

Perforation holes of 0.5–0.8 mm diameter - roughly 140,000 per square metre - are virtually invisible at normal viewing distance, so the surface reads as a clean, uninterrupted flat panel while Helmholtz resonance at micro-scale, aided by the cavity behind it, does the acoustic work.

8Metal Perforated Acoustic Panels (AcoMetal™)Industrial-grade, cleanable, moisture-resistantNRC 0.55–0.85

A metal or aluminium frame surrounds a perforated metal skin - typically 22-gauge perforated galvanised steel - with an encapsulated acoustic fibreglass fill sealed in black heat-sealed polywrap. Sound enters through the perforations and is absorbed by the fill, delivering durability and washability that fabric or wood-based panels can't match.

  • Face: 22-gauge perforated galvanised steel or aluminium, powder-coated in RAL colours
  • Core: acoustic fibreglass fill, encapsulated in black heat-sealed polywrap
  • Mounting: flush or stand-off
  • Fire rating: Class A - inherently non-combustible metal face
  • Humidity: fully moisture-resistant — pools, wet areas, industrial spaces
  • Customisation: perforation pattern, size, powder-coat colour, mounting

Best for: gymnasiums, swimming pool enclosures, pump rooms, industrial fabrication, commercial kitchens, healthcare facilities, transit hubs.

Questions, Answered

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between acoustic wall panels and soundproofing?

Acoustic wall panels reduce reverberation, echo, and noise buildup within a room by absorbing sound energy. They do not prevent sound from passing between rooms - that requires soundproofing (STC-rated walls, partitions, and doors). Most spaces need both: acoustic treatment inside and isolation at the boundary. See our soundproof partition range for STC-rated wall systems.

What NRC rating should I specify for a corporate office?

For open-plan offices, NRC ≥ 0.75 for wall panels is the minimum meaningful specification. For conference rooms and boardrooms, NRC ≥ 0.85 is recommended on primary reflection surfaces (rear wall, side walls). Our acoustic consultants calculate the precise NRC and coverage area for your room volume and RT60 target.

Can acoustic wall panels be used on ceilings as well?

Yes. Grooved wooden slats, perforated panels, fabric-wrapped panels, and WFF wood wool tiles are all available in ceiling configurations - direct-fix to substrate or suspended in grid systems. For exposed ceilings in open-plan spaces, acoustic hanging baffles and acoustic ceiling clouds are the preferred treatment. Combining wall and ceiling treatment always outperforms treating either surface alone.

Are the panels fire rated for auditoriums and public buildings?

Yes. All commercial panels in the range carry appropriate fire safety ratings: ASTM D-876 Class A for WFF and fabric-wrapped panels; IS/ASTM fire classification for grooved and perforated wooden panels (chemically fire-retardant treated); and inherently non-combustible AcoMetal™ metal panels. Fire certification documents are provided with every project specification.

Do the panels qualify for LEED India or GRIHA certification credits?

Yes. The panels contribute to multiple LEED v4.1 and GRIHA credit categories: Indoor Environmental Quality (acoustic performance), Materials and Resources (certified 35% recycled content), and Low-Emitting Materials (VOC-free construction). Full documentation - NRC test certificates, recycled content certificates, VOC-free declarations, and fire rating certificates - is provided for green building credit submissions.

How long does an acoustic wall panel installation take?

A single conference room (30–50 sq m of panel area) typically takes 2–3 days. A full open-plan office floor (500–1,000 sq m) takes 2–4 weeks depending on access, ceiling height, and layout complexity. Our installation teams work in sections to minimise disruption to operational spaces.

Can panels be customised with our brand colours or graphics?

Yes. Fabric-wrapped panels take full-colour graphic and photographic printing on the fabric face. CNC PET felt panels come in 30+ colours with unlimited CNC-cut shapes, including brand-logo cut-outs. EchoStop™ grooved slat panels are available in 50+ pre-laminated finishes. Our design team works directly with architects and interior designers to match the specification to the project's visual identity.
